This bathroom conversion posed a few challenges that required creative problem-solving. Below is an outline of the work completed to transform the space into a modern, functional bathroom.
Floor Preparation and Insulation
In the initial stage of the bathroom conversion, the plan was to build on a suspended wooden floor. However, once the floorboards were removed, we realized that this wasn’t feasible. We replaced the suspended floor with a solid, insulated base to ensure proper stability and insulation.
Key steps included:
- Removing the old suspended floor.
- Installing a solid, insulated base for stability.

Plumbing and Heating Installation
During the bathroom conversion, we took care to conceal all plumbing and heating pipes for a clean finish. The heating pipes were hidden within the floor, while the plumbing lines for the shower and toilet were carefully integrated into the walls and floor.

Wet Room Alternative and Shower Installation
Initially, the plan was to create a wet room for this bathroom conversion. However, the drainage system’s design did not support it, so we opted for a stylish grey shower tray instead. The shower area was enclosed with a 10mm thick glass shower screen to maintain a sleek and open feel.
Flooring and Tiling Work
For the flooring, we installed a tongue-and-groove floating floor. This was followed by the application of a self-levelling compound, and a Ditra membrane to relieve tension before the final tiling.
The tiling work included:
- Floor-to-ceiling tiling with a mosaic feature.
- Ditra membrane applied for tension relief.
- Floating floor with tongue-and-groove installation.

Vanity Unit and Electrical Work
As part of the bathroom conversion, we installed a custom-built vanity unit that spanned wall-to-wall. This unit housed the toilet cistern and offered additional storage space. The sink area was complemented by a mirror, and we upgraded the electrical system, which included installing sleek, modern lighting fixtures.
Waterproofing and Final Touches
To protect the shower area, we applied a waterproof membrane before tiling, ensuring long-term durability. Cement boards were used around the shower walls, and the project was completed with a fresh coat of paint, giving the bathroom a clean and polished look.
